If you love your SAP system, you decorate it. Preferably with fresh colors in the local* SAPGUI (*spares colleagues and superiors, since they do not have to see the local SAPGUI jewelry). The experienced SAP basic person, on the other hand, has further privileges – and therefore does not do things by halves: if decorating, then for all.
The login screen (from the outside)
Because SAP knows how important personalization is for identification with the Central European common SAP logon screen, it has created several ways to embellish the SAP system.
The first of the personalization options explained here is not quite as comprehensive, but it is nice and far-reaching – because everyone who knows the system’s connection data can see it. The login screen can be changed so that attentive users are presented with a motto of the day, for example, before they log in.
To do this, create a document of type „General Text“ with the name „ZLOGIN_SCREEN_INFO“ in SE61 (in the appropriate login language, profile parameter zcsa/system_language). In this document you define the input text (approx. 45 characters, so the balancing is a bit tedious).

The following formatting options are given :
- Headings with format key U
- Icons (enclosed by @) may be inserted at the beginning of the line
- Up to 6.40 typical SAPScript formatting can also be used
Exciting icons can be found in the overview RSTXICON (SE38). In order not to have to change directly in productive systems (SE06), it is recommended to transport the screens. Attention : of course they will be visible in any intermediate system, so please follow the goose-step principle :
- Set PRD-Login : Change in ENT -> Transport TST -> Transport PRD
- Setting the TST-Login : Change in ENT -> Transport TST
- Set ENT login : Change to ENT
The Login Screen (from inside)
If this is not enough, SAP offers another way to please the user. This is done by replacing the beautiful blue waves (right half of the screen when the detail area is not hidden / minimized), which you normally see directly after login.
There is hardly a limit to the creativity of the motivated administrator, colors and shapes can form and share a perfect work of art under his hand – because GIF is allowed.
With the transaction SMW0 (ESS EMM WEH NULL) one has the possibility to upload binary objects into the system. This is a prerequisite for changing the welcome image. Once the image is uploaded, it can be activated in the SSM_CUST table.

Here are exciting settings that can be made:
- START_IMAGE
- RESIZE_IMAGE YES / NO (no usually looks nicer)
- Modification NAVIGATION_READ_START_IMAGE : instead of fixed value, specify XXXX as placeholder in SSM_CUST, and fill dynamically in the user variables
In addition .
… it makes sense to discuss changes to the system layout with colleagues and functional area beforehand.
… it has proven to be a good idea to place release and clients on the login screen in addition to the SID.
… it is a good idea to provide the start GIF with a hint whether you are in PRD, TST or ENT.
… modifications to SAP standard objects solely for design reasons should be considered carefully – the next upgrade SPAU will thank you for it.
Have fun embellishing!
